Toftholders' Association
Did you know that Wellow is reputed to have the second largest area of common land in the North of England?
The common land in Wellow comprises of 40 acres of open access land, and includes the cricket club grounds, the fishing club and the green where the maypole is located.
Many households in Wellow have what are known as 'toft rights' attached to them, which means they can graze certain amounts of animals on the land.
The common land is owned by the Lord of the Manor and looked after by a committee of toftholders’ but is free for everyone to use as open access land and an important amenity for all residents and visitors to the village to enjoy.
Do you know which parts of the village are common land? Attached are two maps which show the areas of common land.
We would welcome any interested villagers to join the committee and help Wellow make the most of this village asset.
Our vision statement for the common land is attached and our constitution. Also, a list of known toft rights.
